Huperzine A is a substance obtained from a plant called Chinese fork moss (Huperzia serrata). Used in alternative medicine, Huperzine A acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor, a type of drug used to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine (a chemical necessary for learning and memory). Huperzine A (not only used to treat Alzheimer's disease) is believed to improve learning and memory and protect against age-related cognitive decline. Quite often it is used to increase energy, alertness, combat depression, and help treat myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease that affects the muscles. Hupercine raises the level of acetylcholine, which has potential in the case of sports activity (large amounts of it are used during exercise). Moreover, acetylcholine is a key neurotransmitter responsible for improving short and long-term memory.
Huperzine A may interact with some medications, including cholinesterase inhibitors, beta blockers, and anticonvulsants. Given these safety concerns, it is important to consult your doctor if you are considering using Huperzine A.
